The collections

The museum’s collections offer a vast panorama of the history of painting, from the end of the 16th century to the present day.

Considerable space is given to history painting, maritime paintings, artists of the Pont-Aven School, Nabis and Symbolism. The museum also exhibits Asian objects mostly given by marine officers.

The museum’s collections have acquired wide renown in the museum and art world, as is clearly demonstrated by the numerous requests for loans both from France and abroad.

The thematic presentation focuses on certain essential themes: history painting, depictions of Brest’s port and navy, depictions of the other (Orientalism and Japonisma), “dream” painting (the School of Pont-Aven, the Nabis, Symbolism) and furthermore, the works of artists belonging to Brest art critic Charles Estienne’s circle and the works of a Brest painter, François Dilasser.

The hanging arrangement may be modified to suit projects, the presentation of works in temporary exhibitions, or loans made to the museum.
